In Reply to: JD STX 30 won't start posted by Craig on Sunday, August 12, 2001:

: Hello, I have a JD STX 30 with a Kohler Command 9 Model CV 125 motor.

: When I switch the key fom run to start I am not getting the switched 12 volts to the solenoid. I traced the wires and the wire from the solenoid goes to 1 pin of a 2 pin connector. The other wire in this connector comes from a relay mounted near the battery.

: The two wires run to two small brass or copper terminals on the axle housing. I don't know what these terminals are for (possibly a neutral switch?)

: When I put a voltmeter to the relay side of the connector there is 0V -- when I turn the switch to run I see the voltage slowly rising to 12 V -- when I move the switch to start the voltage drops back down to 0 and I have to put the switch back to run and wait for the voltage to climb again.

: Does anyone know what the two terminals are on the housing? I tried jumping across this connector and turning the key and I got the starter to jump and that's it. I can't get it to do it again though.

: Thanks in Advance.

Have same mower... to your problem first.

The terminal on top of the Trans case is a neutral safety sw. This switch is mechanically opened or closed by gear selection. This sw. simply screws into the trans case with right size socket. Note this sw. can go bad.

Other reasons why your mower won't start are the obvious... such as the ignition + relay behind battery compartment ect. [a $9.00 relay at JD]

Sounds like you have it scoped out.
Let me know about the resolution of your problem.

My problem is engine shuts down when I place mower in any gear. i.e. tells me the neutral safety sw. is doing its job. Problem definitely in the relay.

On way to pick up relay and I'll install a new NSS since this one is old.

later...
