GB, Its hard to say if its your alternater or not. I dought it is since it kept running after you disconnected the battery, it still seems as though you have a bad connection or " other component" and like you said you need to test these. Take a test light or volt meter and start by testing the battery terminals to see if you get juice there, if so then you need to check to see if it is 12V-13V, and if you do have juice there it could be a bad battery.
If you dont have juice you need to start working your way back to the solenoid. There should be a wire connected to the same terminal as the lead wire that goes to your battery, this is the alternater wire make sure it is getting a good connection. If you cant get juice from it then you need to test the wire itself by going behind the brass connector and poke your tester into the wire through the plastic coating. this will tell you if the wire is not getting a good conection to the brass connector. Remember to ground your tester to the engine and not the negative terminal because it could have a bad connection, you will need to test it before you move on to the solenoid, do this by grounding your tester to the engine and check the positive terminal again, if you get juice now and you didnt earlier when you used just the terminals then you simply have a bad ground wire or ground wire connection.
Let me know how it goes, if it doesnt work I will try to tell you how to do further testing.
