: thanks for the quick response, Jason. I just had a chance this morning to go through and check out what you said there. I still can't seem to get it. The mower will continue to run when I disconnect the battery. I checked *all* the connections and they seemed ok. Here are a couple of other symptoms that just appeared with this problem. Now there is clicking from the starter relay when I try to crank it. I know this is probably expected with no juice in the battery, but I don't really know. Now the blades will cut off on me in the middle of mowing. I expected with the electric pto that it wouldn't cut on without jumping it, but once it is on, shouldn't it stay on until it is disengaged by physical means? Unless you have any other ideas, I may just have to take it in to the shop on Mon. Thanks a lot for your help.

GB, Hmmmmmm! Well first I am sorry for not responding sooner to this quiry but I have been away. The clicking from the starter relay is (as you stated) from not enough "juice". I would jumper your battery to your car and see if it still does this, if it does it may be a bad relay or cylinoid. As far as the electric pto or clutch goes, no it will not stay on if it is engaged with electricity, as your battery runs down after you jump it your loosing the very thing that keeps this clutch engaged " magnitisim". I am 99% sure that your problem lies in the fact that your not charging the battery while running and your alternater cant sustain enough current to keep up with the clutch and other electric parts at the same time this is why you loose it "pto" in the middle of mowing, your battery runs down and you loose your reserve juice that keeps the "pto" engaged. Keep looking for an electrical problem between the battery and engine, it almost has to be a failure in some external electrical component e.g voltage regulator, relay, fuse etc. keep us informed on progress. Good luck!
