Dear Francis,
i have had the same problem working on a stx38. they are the worst riding mowers john deere has ever made. every one i know who has one has had problems with it. first of all, is it a black or yellow cutting deck? if it is a black deck, that is the worst one. check and see if the pulleys have slack in them. put both hands on them a try to wiggle them. if they move:if they move a lot, they need replacing.that would be your whole problem. if they have a little slack in them, they are or starting to be your problem.just replace them or have your dealer replace them. i'm 14 and know all of this. another promblem is that your belt isn't tight enough.the spring is probably stretched and wore out. if nothing else works, youmight just have to buy a new deck.also the pulleys maybe out of line. the deck cold be bent. all of this applys to the yellow deck too.
hope this helps. write back with any information!!!!!! -Brandon a.k.a. B-Low
