: I have a John Deere 425 that I purchased new in 1993. It runs great in the winter but in the summer when the engine gets hot it spits and sputters and won't re-start when I stop mowing for a while. When I take off the air cleaner I can see the gas boiling in the carb. because it gets so hot from the muffler. Just for kicks I put some tin foil between the carb. and the muffler. It helped but I a bit disappointed that I paid thousands for a tractor and need tin foil to help it run right in the summer. My local service guys just look at like I'm nuts. A co-worker has the same tractor with exactly the same problem. Any ideas on how to fix this beast?
Been there, done that, got the t-shirt...
Had the same problem, but it is much better now after finding a shop that seemed to know something the others didn't. Bad news is I don't know if they really did anything to it! The most successful improvement was had after they said the air filter was clogged. The way the mixture was obviously messed up, I can understand that something was happening with the air supply. New filter and some extra care in checking it, and the tractor runs much better (but not purrfect...)
I also had looked for some way the fuel line might be heating up, because it always looked like vapor lock. Couldn't find anything. If you had fuel up in the air filter, it would choke things off. I had a 5hp power washer engine with a filter that got soaked when it flooded. Engine would run fine without it. Ran fine when I put a new, clean, filter in. How much oil did you put on the outer foam element?
Hope this helps, and that my tractor keeps running. Can't beat that 60" deck!
