Daniel - The "clicking" is a commong problem on some model Deere tractors with a solenoid starter (as opposed to a Bendix starter). To verify, if your 318 has an Onan P218G, it has the solenoid starter. Older 318s with the Onan B43G hav ethe Bendix starter.
Deere has a kit for a little over $20 that is a wiring harness and a relay that provides a boost to the starter solenoid and should eliminate the clicking. The part number is AM107421.
Regarding the freewheel, the lever is under the rear fender on the right side. There should be a sticker or decal that to push down on the lever to freewheel. Make sure to return the lever to its proper position before starting or attempting to drive the unit. Sometimes you have to "rock" the tractor a bit while someone returns the lever to the up position. - Dave
