on the jd 160-185 models there is spring that attaches to the plastic. You need to remove the plastic cover (1 screw. The spring attaches to the lower side of the plastic and the other end of the spring attaches to the metal deck. the adjustment lever just slides along the spring, it doesn't actually connect to the height lever.
It is kind of tricky putting the plastic peice back on.
PS.You should adjust the height when the deck is not engaged. It just doesn't work when the deck is lowered.
