In Reply to: Looking at a STX38 project mower Need suggestions posted by Robert McHenry on Tuesday, July 06, 2004:
Should be looking for any 200 series or 300 series tractors out in back of his garage. I'm not a big fan of Deere's STX mowers and I personally couldn't bring myself to spend much on fixing one up, but that is just me. If you really have a hankering to fix one up, check for compression in the motor, decent tires (They are surprisingly expensive to replace) looseness in the mower deck bearings, damaged steering components, mouse eaten wiring (That alone would make me walk away!) rust, dents, melted ANYTHING, and if there is any oil in the motor. There are a hundred other things to look at, but if it doesn't get past this short list, keep your money and walk away.
