Is this a rotor pump? Or an inline pump? If the pump wasn't timed then it wouldn't have started. If it is a rotor pump take off the timing plug on the pump. Its on the body of the pump held on by two screws. If there is a lot of rubber chunks that visible then the advance ring is bad. You can send them off to be rebuilt or get a remaned pump
