It may also be the ignition module - when the tractor will not start, place a voltmeter across the primary coil terminals. When you crank the engine, the voltage should go from 0 to 12v and then back to zero. If not, it is the ignition module.
The engine must be removed in order to remove the flywheel and gain access to the module.
Parts are MUCH cheaper at an Onan distributor vs. a John Deere dealer!
