As a follow up, you said that you were unfamiliar with tractors and I didn't go into detail as to types of tractors. Lawn tractors are primarily designed to cut lawn and are not really meant for serious "ground engagement" and garden tractors are strong enough and powerful enough to plow the soil. In recent years, there has been some blurring of the line in that high end lawn tractors have tillers available and do a decent job, and some low end garden tractors are not really strong enough in their frame or axels to get down and dirty making furrows. While you are shopping, don't be shy to get up close to stuff. Quality shows if you look for it. Things like grease fittings on pivot points in the steering, the thickness of metal in the mower deck, how the wheels are attached (bolts vs. easily broken spring clips). And since your dad will be using this tractor to cut grass AND till, quality of design will show up in how easy it is to remove tha tiller and reinstall it, remove the mower deck and reinstall it. Since only 1/4 of an acre is grass, keeping the mower deck around 36"-38" will make it lighter and easier to handle and not cause him to be cutting grass for hours and hours. Those big 4 foot and 5 foot monsters are great if there is a lot of acreage to cut, but can weigh over 200 pounds.I hope this additional info helps out.
