You can get a tractor with tiller new for less than $2000 up to $10,000. It would help in recommending something if I knew what kind of budget you had, how big a garden, what other work it will need to do (cut grass and how much, blow or plow snow and how much) Based on you inquiry if you just want dad to be able to sit down while tilling and need nothing else, you can do it with a Sears Craftsman, Cub, Simplicity etc and a tiller. If you think a used machine is ok, the 318 mentioned above is one of the very best setups there is and can be done for around $2,000-$2,500 for a nice one. You could also use one of the old 200 series (210, 212, 214, 216) from the 1970's to 1990? and get a nice low hour machine with tiller for $1,250-$1,800. Vintage Cub tractors are available also with good tillers for even less money. Adding a mower deck to the setup ups the price as does a snowblower. If you can be more specific, I can narrow my recommendations down. I also suggest taking your dad to a few dealers to see what features he likes and dislikes, such as foot controls vs. hand controls and what has the best fit for him as to leg room and comfort. If you are wanting to keep this a surprise, tell him it is for you and you just want him to come for his opinion. Have fun!
