I want to first tell you that I'm not intimately familiar with the STX38. My experience is with older 200 and 300 series tractors. But the charging system is pretty straight forward. Your engine turns a stator inside that makes electricity which goes to the regulator which goes to the battery. With the engine running, your stator should be putting out around 24 volts to the regulator. If you can determine which wires are coming from the stator (inside the engine) to the regulator, those are the ones you want to test for voltage. If you don't get something close to 24 volts, then your stator is bad (somewhat rare but it happens), if current is coming to the regulator, you have already established there is not enough current coming from the regulator to the battery so your regulator is bad. EXCEPT IF there is a loose or broken connection somewhere. Remember these connections see A LOT of vibration. Have you tried to make sure all of your wire plugs are tightly connected? All fuses are OK? All wires firmly attached to their connectors? No burned insulation?
