Hello,
I have a JD STX 38 with the black Deck. My problem is with the charging system. The charging system is not charging my battery. I use the tractor once a week, and about every two month I have to charge the battery with a battery charger. In between charges the tractor will start fine. Towards the end of the two month period there isn't enough power in the battery to turn over the engine. I went to my local JD dealer and explained the problem. He asked me if I had ever changed out the voltage regulator. I told him no and he said that this is what is causing the trouble. The new voltage regulator is $45 dollars which is not bad if it gets the charging system working again. Do any of you think it is the voltage regulator, or could it be something else? How can I test my charging system to see if it is charging the battery? I cranked the tractor and took both leads off of the battery. With the tractor running I connected a volt meter to the leads and I was reading 1.8 volts DC. Shouldn't I be getting 12 volts if the charging system is working properly? Any and all help is greatly appreciated.
