STX38 elec. clutch trouble?

My STX38 will mow fine for a little while (30 min. - 1 hr.), and then the mower drive (PTO) starts disengaging/re-engaging on its own, with a wide range of time lapses, anywhere from 1 second intervals to 5 minutes. I know this can't be positively diagnosed on the net, but does this sound like the clutch(pto)? I've checked most of the wiring for shorts or loose connections. Any help will be appreciated! Les
