I've got a 318 tractor that a friend of mine is selling me. He's had it since it had approximately 200 hours on it. It now has 800 hours. The tractor has been maintained professionally and is in extremely good condition... except one thing. It has a whine to it that makes it sound like a helicopter engine spooling up. The sound is a hign-pitched whine that increases with engine RPM. To me, it sounds like a hydraulics impeller or something. My friend has had it checked 2 or 3 times and the shop where he takes it tell him there's nothing wrong with the tractor, which appears to be obvious as the tractor has made this sound ever since he bought it - apparently 600 hours later it still hasn't broken down or anything.
Any clues what this ear-piercing whine is and whether there is anything you can do to reduce it? I've had neighbors who had this same model tractor and this one is substantially louder than the ones I've seen. I really like the tractor, but I would like to solve this sound problem if at all possible. Please feel free to email me offline if this is a known issue; I just found this discussion board today. Thanks in advance.
