: This is a pretty basic question, but I've never done it. How do you get to the piston rings to replace them? I took off the head cover and can see the top of the piston. Looks like I need to remove the cylinder housing (?). Is this bolted in from below? Am I going to have to remove the engine from the tractor to do this?
: Am I even looking in the right place to fix a big oil burning problem (1 qt in 2 hrs or so)?
: This is a JD 140 with a Kohler K321AS 14hp engine. Any help is much appreciated!
You will have to remove the oil pan or base of the engine. You will then need to remove the rod cap and bolts. It will more than likly have some type of keeper on the bolts, don't lose this. Pull the piston and rod out the top. After you put new rings on becareful not to bend the new rings and off set the opeings of the rings, don't line them up. You also should hone the cylinder wall also. Be very clean and oil all of the new parts and put back. I don't know the torque for the rod bolts should find out when you buy the rings from JD.
