I have the exact same problem with my 1998 4100 john deere compact diesel with 520 hours. I also changed the air and fuel filters and added fuel additive.I was told by the dealer that it could be the relay to the glow plugs or the glow plugs getting weak. I have not performed the suggested 500 hour service on the valves and injectors yet. I am taking it to my local dealer tomorrow and will post what it was as soon as I can.
