Still no resoluion on this issue, but now believe it may be caused by the voltage regulator. I pulled the battery to verify and found 4 cells low on water, so I added and charged. A load test on the battery showed the battery was in working order.
I jumped the tractor and took voltage readings off the stator and got 35.7VAC at full throttle. The reading at the battery at full throttle was 20.9VDC. Could this be smoking the ignition control module? I'd like to fully understand the issue before I go out and buy another 90 dollar ignition module only to have it go up in smoke. Thanks in advance for any assistance.
