Hi John,
I had a similar problem with a new pto clutch for my JD 185. The new clutch has a key( machined in as part of the unit and you need to cut off the excess key that is on the shaft originally or the clutch won't tighted up to the pulley and you will never get to torque the bolt to 48 ft lbs per spec.
