I have a 1994 or 1995 JD 425 tractor with the 20HP DOHC K Series engine. I am the original owner. It has 733 hours and generally has run fine. It is used primarily for grass cutting. The only mechanical issue it ever had was the main seal failed very early on (it was two years old) and was reparied satisfactorily. Only thing I ever noticed from that point on was that the engine ran very cool with the needle barely getting into the green zone on the gauge. About two months or so ago I started having a strange problem where the engine would cut off like a light switch after around 30-40 minutes of nornal operation with the center mower engaged. It would start right back up again and run fine for 10 minutes and then do it again. I could get my grass cut but it was a problem. This went on for several months till I took it to the shop. They tuned it up and said they thought it was the time delay relay module. Not sure but I think it is some form of module that makes the engine run on a bit after the ignition is terminated to burn excess gas out of the cyclinders. They needed to order it. They bypassed the box and sent me home with the tractor so I could cut grass and said I could bring it back after the season ended to get the delay module box on. Well, that did not work. Problem was still happening. I discovered that when the engine cut off while cutting grass that if I quickly flipped the choke full on and off the engine would catch and I could keep it going even though I might have to do that 4-5 times or more for each hour of cutting. Today, I was trying to get the grass cut when the engine started to cut out (like a light switch again). By putting it on full choke and leaving it there was the only way to keep her running. Not even sure how the heck it could run with the choke on full. I only ran it that way to try to get it back to the house. It would back fire a bit but keep running and emit some black puffs of smoke from time to time. I am sure after it sits for a few hours I could go out and cut for 30 minutes or so before all this starts over. Any ideas out there? Thanks for any help.
