Hello:
I have positive comments for the 4010. My dad's 4010 was built Oct 16, 1960 according to a John Deere letter that I recieved in writing from them. It has been a great tractor, and was used for heavy tillage as well as light work in grain farming in Kansas. We only use it for light work now. It has over 10,000 hours on it, and for the most part they were trouble free hours. The engine has never been rebuilt and the transmission was opened only once back in '65 for a Deere recall on the ring-gear. My dad got the 4010 when it was less than 3 years old. It has the narrow front end (Roll-o-Matic).
There are somethings that could have been improved, but were technology of the times, such as the 24 volt elec system. If you keep everything maintained electrically, you should have few problems. Just be sure the generator brushes aren't worn down to cause a short. Another thing that could have been improved is the high gear noise when in 8th gear, but I've always thought this was a carry-over from the 2 cylinder models. My dad's 1969 4020 (purchased new in April 69) doesn't have that noise.
If I had my choice to buy either a brand new John Deere tractor model with the closest rating to what the 4010 was, or buy a brand new 4010 like my dad's, I would buy the 4010 in a heartbeat.
