Kevin : Those were some stupid bugs, diving in the fuel tank, man hows that . Oh well it proves without doubt in my mind that even bugs have a good taste when it comes to equipment, they chose the John Deere to die in.
Is the problem your having now the same symptom as you were having originally when the bugs got cleaned out ?
Spit's , sputtering, and black smoke is consistant with not enough air into the fuel through the carburetor, this could have been from several different maintenance issues however I am absolutely positive you were not wrong by replacing your crapsman with the John Deere.
I guess you would have to be a mechanic to really appreciate the John Deere products the way I do, anyone can repair their own John Deere, all information regarding the repairs are readily available on the Deere products and they don't hide trade secrets from mechanics like alot of other companies do.
Go look in your craftsman parts book and try to find a fuel pump/carb rebuild kit , or try to find any part that actually looks like it actually is. John Deere has the best products and they will cost you less in the long term of things such as repairs. So hang in there with the Deere, I am sure it's not a matter of quality that is causeing your problem.
Let us know what the problem is now and we will be happy to assist.
