Ok, I have a 5yr old JD X585 with 260 hours on it. A few days ago, I would try to start it, but it wouldn't kick all the way on. So I checked all these things:

battery
spark plugs
put new fuel in it
air filter
all fuses and connections look good
took fuel filter off and checked for gunk or clogs in the filter and lines it connects too.

I finally noticed that the fuel pump was not making the priming sound when I turned the key.

I called my local dealer and they said it could be the pump or wires around where the pump goes in the tank.

I pulled the old pump, checked the wires and they looked good, so I got a new pump, ($200 + tax!) and installed all the wires, but didn't put it in the tank yet, b/c the dealer told me that if I put it in the tank, I can't return it.

I turn the key and the new pump doesn't make any priming noise at all, while not in the tank.

Does the pump have to be in the tank to make the priming noise, I don't think it does, and now I don't think it's the fuel pump, but something, like a wire is loose or rusted somewhere?

Please somebody HELP, my property is a jungle right now!
