: : I have a '96 STX 38 whose battery died not long ago. We replaced it with a new JD battery, which also died three weeks later. They refused to hold a charge on the tractor. Any help would be appreciated as I have to jump it off my truck now to mow the lawn every time.
: GB, you have a bad charging system. You need to do some testing to figure out where, first start the tractor with battery in place, then disconect the battery, if the tractor dies you have a small job ahead, if not it may be as simple as a bad connection. Always start with the easy things first, look at all of the connections between the battery and the engine, you are looking for any corroded connections or frays even burnt or brittle spots, this is the most likely blaces to have a short or broken wire. Undo all connections and look in at the terminals, look for a white powdery residue this is oxidation and can be easly removed with a pocket knife (on brass terminals the residue is green). After you have done this, test the system again the same as before. Assuming you have the appropriate tools and the test proved negative then you will need to remove the engines shroud and look at the wire under it, look for pinched spots, burns or abraisions. Again assuming none were found, you will need to remove the flywheel ( this is where the alternator is located) being carefull not to damage the magnets on the underneith side. Now look at the wiring and connections keeping in mind not to damage them yourself. If all magnets are in place and the wiring is good you will need to load every thing up and take in to a mechanic because you dont want to start just replacing this or that in hopes that it will work, this gets expencive fast. BE SURE YOU CHECK *ALL* CONNECTIONS BEFORE YOU TEAR INTO THE ENGINE, MORE THAN LIKELY THIS IS WHERE YOUR PROBLEM IS. ONE MORE THING, GO PURCHASE A MANUAL(SHOP MANUAL) A OWERNERS MANUAL DOES NOT GO INTO THIS MUCH DETAIL. Good luck!
