My cam shaft blew in Oct 2001. Only 354 hours on the engine. I bought John Deere for the same reason as others, Quality and reliability. When I saw they had a PLASTIC cam gear I about ropped my teeth. Then when I bought the new gear and observed that it was steel with a gear width twice that of the plastic model I knew JD knew they had a problem and had taken corective action. Unfortunately the corrective action did not include a recall. I was lucky, but others may have more serious damage when the cam blows and may not have the luxury of being able to repair the engine themselves as I did. John Deere should be ashamed of the way they have handled this poor quality piece of equipment. Now that I know others have had the same problem I will pursue with more diligence. Good luck all and for those who have yet to have the cam blow I HIGHLY recommend replacing the cam before she blows. It could save you an entire engine!
