Dale, I have the same issue with my model 850 which is esentialy the same tractor as yours minus a couple of horse power. Sad to say,, after much research, I am going to have to split the cases and replace the traction disk. What has happend is the drive (traction) clutch disk has worn to the point that you can't disengage the PTO clutch to the same point. (PTO clutch doesn't ware as fast). You will find if you over adjust your clutch linkage, your PTO will disengage, however, your traction clutch will stay disengaged!!! This is an issue with 850, 950 and 1050 JD tractors having the dual stage clutch. I believe that there is an adjustment directly on the clutch plate for when the clutch is first installed, however to access this you still have to split the tractor (at least on my 850). Even if you were to make the adjustment, at this point, your drive clutch is not long for this world. JD website quotes $1976.27 plus shipping for a complete new clutch assembly, just a drive disk is $275, and a PTO disk is $295.
Best of luck Phil C.
