The gap in the PTO clutch doesn't effect the charging of the batttery. With these PTO clutches, they do need a reasonable batttery to keep them engaged with the proper force.
You will probably find that the large gap in the clutch is stopping it from clamping hard enough to cut the long grass.
If you adjust the gap, the slipping problem should be solved. If you fully charge the battery, you should get a reasonable amount of time before the power is too low to keep the clutch engaged.
Battery voltage should be just over 12 volts while sitting. The voltage shouldn't drop below 10 volts while you are actually cranking it over. and at full throttle it will be between 13 and 14.5 volts approximately.
