In my earlyer response (found below) I neglected to mention the JD mechanic found a trace amount of antifteeze in the oil. I suspect (and hope) this is antifreeze seeping past the rings.

Hi Joe,
I spoke with the JD mechanic this morning; he pulled the heads; and inspected both the head and the cylinder; with no problems found other than antifreeze was in the problem cylinder. He reassembled the engine, it still smokes. He recommended magnafluxing (using Zygol)the aluminum cylinder head and intake manifold. He said he is stumped.
