I have the same problem, engine won't start, I replaced coil which was bad, I now have spark but seems to be firing too late, as I hear a slight muffled pop in the muffler. I also suspected the key may be partially cut and allowing the flywheel to be off just enough 1-2 degrees to keep the engine from firing on the ignition stroke. did you find out if your key was slightly severed? Please let me know, I'm about to remove the flywheel. Also I noticed the coil mounting is a little sloppy, depending on how you position the coil when you tighten it down you could affect the timing. Before the engine problems started I had noticed it would sometimes backfire during startup. Any ideas other than the keyway?
