The way to check the hydraulic oil level is with the glass window on the back of the tractor down by the PTO shaft. Fill until oil is half way up on the glass window. Pour then let settle, pour a bit more, let settle. Do it with the tractor on level ground.
The plug on top is the fill hole for the Hydraulics.
Atleast that is they way it is on my 2000, 4300.
