Deb - When you specify "drive belt", you could either be referring to the transmission drive belt or the mower deck drive belt. In either case, belts getting chewed and thrown are usually for the same reasons.
A flange on a sheave chould be bent and tearing into the belt. Something is binding, like a spindle shaft due to a bad bearing (mower deck), broken gear tooth (transmission).
Belt slippage can cause a belt to overheat and give out. The taper on the sides of the belt must match the sheave tapers that it engages.
Believe it or not, if you are using a non-Deere belt, that is a major cause of belt failure. - Dave
