Had the same problem on my JD316 with Onan engine. Initially, charge light came on when using head lights at less than full throttle. Progressively it got worse til at 540 hours light was on all the time. Think it was still producing a weak charging current even when the light was on. I measured 28 vac off the alternator at full throttle.
Replaced the voltage regulator and everything is fine. The replacement was shaped different from the orginal, hopefully they made some improvements. It was around $50.
: My 318 tractor with the Onan 18hp engine is having charging problems. The battery light will sometimes stay illuminated even at full throttle. The stator output is 20v AC. It appeared to be a bad lead from the regulator so I replaced that and the problem is still there. I cleaned and applied di-electric grease to the connections as well.
: I plan to temorarly install an ammeter on the regulator output to verify the charging condition. If the battery light is off and I turn on the headlights, the battery light will illuminate. I believe this to be caused by the additional amp draw of the headlights.
: Does anyone have any suggestions? I really do not want to replace the regulator unless I know for certain that it is defective.
: Thanks!
