: I have a John Deere 425 that I purchased new in 1993. It runs great in the winter but in the summer when the engine gets hot it spits and sputters and won't re-start when I stop mowing for a while. When I take off the air cleaner I can see the gas boiling in the carb. because it gets so hot from the muffler. Just for kicks I put some tin foil between the carb. and the muffler. It helped but I a bit disappointed that I paid thousands for a tractor and need tin foil to help it run right in the summer. My local service guys just look at like I'm nuts. A co-worker has the same tractor with exactly the same problem. Any ideas on how to fix this beast?
I have a 1994 425 with the same problem. The Dealer as worked on the carb a couple times, but it is no better. I make sure to keep the air cleaner clean as well as the screen behind the radiator. Even tried the tin foil between muffler and the carb. The dealer change the thermostat and the temp guage stays in the normal range, so I think the cooling systme is working ok.
