In Reply to: STX38 starting problem posted by John on Monday, August 25, 2003:
Banging on it won't do much good. That works with starters that have an integrated starter solenoid (essentially, a relay).
The STX38 uses an external (non-integrated) relay (located just forward, and to the right of the battery).
Try this:
Using a HEAVY GAUGE conductor (such as one "leg" of a jumper cable), bridge directly from the positive battery terminal to the lug terminal on the starter.
If it (the starter) ain't functional, well... that's that. Replace it (the starter).
If the starter is functional, you'll know it, pretty quick, and the problem is likely the external relay.
However, be aware that the no-spin COULD be caused by a failure and/or disconnect of one of the "safety" interlocks. And there's three of them on the STX38.
One is under the seat (you have to be sitting on the seat to "arm" it).
Another is the PTO (blade clutch) switch (which has to be in the "off" position).
The third is linked to the shifter (you have to be in "neutral").
OBTW, it helps if the battery is well-charged, and all connections are "solid". Those "minor details" have bit me a time or two.
