This might also indicate a Rich fuel condition. Rings wouldn't have much to do with smoke on startup and it certainly wouldn't smoke less after it's started. It probably floods when you let it sit and then when you try to start it, it takes a while the starts firing on less than 4 cylinders. Then it smooths out but still running rich. Check your carb float level, jets and choke mechanism. I'd also shut off your fuel supply when you're done using it.
