Help, '78 JD 316 Kohler won't start - one "click" only

I used it hard all day, then it would not start, starter won't turn. Battery is good, lights are bright, full of gas, in neutral, brake on, etc. Just a single "click" under the floor after the key is turned. Sound is NOT coming from the engine or starter, I can't see where it is coming from. I have not taken the cowling off yet.

Any ideas on what to check first? Buy a new starter and install myself? How much do you think?
