In Reply to: My first JD 316, what can y'all tell me about it? posted by Joe Snapp on Friday, September 07, 2001:

: Greetings to all. I bought a used JD last night with 1000 hours, 3-blade mower deck and a front hydraulic blade.

: C316G #090127M
: Kohler KTP2379 #9203721

: Anyone know what year these are and if the engine seems original to the tractor?

: Also, the seller said the "anti-dieseling solenoid" was faulty and since he disconnected it, the engine ran fine (if not better) without it. Any comments on this, should I replace it? What's involved time and cost?

: I filled it up with premium gas on the way home, then read the manual that said use only min 85 REGULAR gas, NOT PREMIUM. Oops! I hope one tank won't kill it.

: The tractor sometimes wants to move forward very slightly when it is in Neutral. I can stop this by fussing with the hydrostaic lever. The manual said this was normal and a dealer could adjust the linkage if it became a problem. Comments?

: Otherwise it runs fine and looks to be a lot of fun on my new 6 acres.

: Thanks,

: Joe Snapp

Hi Joe
As the caretaker of a large cemetery I can tell you the 316 is a good tractor. We have two.
Regular unleaded will work fine in this tractor.
Creeping is a common problem with the 300 series tractors. And yes you can take it in and have the
linkage adjusted, but this didn't work long for us.
As you become familiar with the unit, you may want to take the housing off (easy, four bolts) the take the gas tank off and replace the line going in the tank, I found out the hard way these rubber lines rot and really clog up the fuel pump.
Also with the housing off or from underneath with the screen off you will want to grease the fittings
on the drive shaft u-joints (two locations).

Warning !! the unit has a rod underneath on the right, this is disengaged when pushing the tractor a short distance. Do not try to tow the tractor, tow of my bright employees did this with a car, it destroyed the insides of the hydraulic pump. We are looking at a big bill for repairs.

Good luck
Ron
