It probably is just linkage. There are refresh kits available to fix it. It's not terribly hard to do but access can be a PITA.
There may be some fork ramp/roller issues too. You have to remove the top cover to get those.
If it has a factory cab, you can access the top covers with the cab in place. I don't know if this is true for the aftermarket cabs.
It is not a hydro. This tractor has 8 forward and 4 reverse speeds; A 4 speed trans followed by a High/Low/Reverse range section. It may also have a TA (torque amplifier) This is a planetary gear reducer located between the speed trans and the clutch. This gives 2 speeds (direct drive and low) in each gear.
