Byron: Serial number 968J would be a 1963, first year the 404 was built. J indicates it has a Rockford clutch, they all had that after 1953.
The disc brakes are almost that simple. You may find when you remove that cover, shims behind it. Not sure when that started, sometime between 62 and 67. If it has shims, they are designed to be removed as breaking surfaces wear.
Other than that it has two discs with an acuator between them. The actuator is just two steel plates with 3 steel balls between them. There are tapered grooves in plates for balls to run in. The plates are held together with springs. Big thing with these is keeping them clean.
It used to be an annual event on my farm, cleaning disc brakes and replacing broken springs on Farmalls. Quite often one encountered glazed discs. Just rough them up with a rasp or wire brush.
