John: Your not the first to speculate what model letters and numbers actually mean. I doubt if you'll be the last either. Every senario I've ever looked at, get all blown to hell before you finish the series. Take this example A was FAA, B was FAB, etc.

Take for example hood badges of 40-60 series. A lot of folks have speculated first number was number of plows tractor would handle and the 4 or 6 was number of cylinders. The cylinder part is right, however the 140 comfortably handles a 2x12 plow in just about all conditions. It would require quite ideal condition for the 340, 460 and 560 to handle 3, 4 and 5 bottom plows.

Then with 04-06 series the speculators called last number cylinders and all preceeding numbers horsepower. It would require a vivid imagination to get 40hp from a 404 or 50 hp from a 504. 606 and 706 were close, then every 806 in the country cranked out 90 hp. I expect the 1206 was about right.

I don't even think about it anymore, I doubt if IH bean counters gave it anymore thought than to be sure two different tractors didn't get the same model number.
