Like you I suspect ether has been at least part of the problem but he wont admit using it. I had used it 15 to 20 years ago and again 12 months ago and both times it was very similar.Knowing what internationals own diesels (truck in particular) are like I never expect them to be easy starters.
Air getting into the fuel system is 1 aspect I had not considered. He has since told me that when he bought the tractor it had had some engine work done but could not remember the details.
