Tony: I've reread both your posts and you mention broken pistons. How did these pistons break? When I read this I get very suspicious someone is using ether on a glow plug engine. If that be the case he's lucky he hasn't broke more. HE CAN NOT USE ETHER AND GLOW PLUGS AT SAME TIME.

This takes me right back to my last post. Your friend refused to use glow plugs long enough for a proper start, then when it didn't start he added the ether. If that is what he is doing, he's courting disaster. Sounds like he already had disaster.

One other thing that can make diesels hard to start, first start of the day, and that is a air suction leak between fuel tank and injection pump. These can be hard to find, but they introduce air to fuel system and after being parked 12 hours, your fighting air in the injection pump. One way to check this is bleed an injector during that first start of the day. If bleeding improves that first start you know air is entering the fuel system. I just can't imagine that could go on for 30 years without getting worse.
