Tony: You should talk with an IH expert on these. The first ones were not climatized well for North America. Most of those have been corrected at rebuild time. I must admit most of this problem happened with B-250 and B-275.
There could be another problem, that being you. Folks without glow plug experience, tend not to use the glow plugs long enough before cranking. It is a mimamum 45 seconds summer, up to 3-4 minutes in winter. That winter one can be shortened by installing a circulating block heater. Circulating block heaters make it much easier on starter and batteries. They also extend the life of engine. I use my block heater once temp drops below 40F, even though I don't need it for startering. I normally get 10,000 hours service from a diesel.
