Peter: Double action cylinders were optional in those days. Just because they had ports at each end did not make them double action. For most, it was a way of recovering oil that bypassed the piston. On the old single action H & M that front port was just piped back to reservoir to return the bypassed oil. Many got hooked double action on newer tractors, and while they did excert some down pressure, they were not true double action.
You may also have double action with bad packing on down pressure side. Most hydraulic shops can convert single action cylinders that have ports at both ends.
