So, to charge the battery, there must be a live wire that goes from the charging system to the battery. It may terminate at the battery side of the starter switch rather than at the battery terminal.
To make the ammeter work, the live wire from the charging system must terminate on one side of the ammeter. There would then be a wire that goes from the second terminal on the ammeter to the battery or battery side of the starter. That puts the ammeter in series with the charging circuit.
