If your tractor has the old type Bendix starter drive, those have been troublesom over the years. The Bendix gave trouble usually by the time the tractor was 5 years old. Most Of us have changed these tractors to a clutch type starter drive, available only at CaseIH. It's close to 15 years since I bought one, thus that may have changed, and they are available other places. I changed my tractors about 15 years ago and neither starter has been off the tractors since. I can't remember using the hand crank since, I don't even carry them on the tractors anymore. I've neve had an IH starter lock up since.
