I had the same problem with a 70's diesel 444. After draining and cleaning the reservior and the stainless screen/filter located on the right side front of the reservior the steering and lift performance was much improved. The hydraulic steering mechanism under the steering wheel/dash still leaks some but not enought to warrant taking all apart that must be removed to fix it. Upon initial start up each time the steering wheel can take a few minutes to respond until the hydraulic pump comes up to full pressure.
