the 312 is the engine that was built in melrose parks works, chicago. The 310 and 358 are the germen engines built in Neuss germany. Although the piston diameter may be the same on the german engines, one would have to check a parts manual to compare part numbers as piston pin location may be different. Also, there is a higher compression version of the pistons on the 310 and 358 that is a much nicer running engine. Start better, stink less. O-rings have to be matched to the serial number of the engine block and are critical.
