The new style drive sold by Case IH doesn't use the spring, rather a rubber cushioned type drive, have put many on H and M and C, and according to parts book looks like same number would fit the A. You have to throw away the two washers that have the larger hole in them, but be sure to have the smaller one on to control end play of armature, and just to look at the drive one would say, this isn't going to work, but they do and are much better, however, take a look at the ring gear on flywheel as this may be part of your problem.
